Would: Repeated Situations

To talk about repeated past actions we can use “would”:

Every Monday I would begin my day with a big cup of coffee. (I don’t do it anymore.)
Jim would always begin a meeting with some small talk. (He doesn’t do it anymore.)
Those days we wouldn’t go to the cinema very often.
Would she begin each meeting this way?

Remember, using both “would” and “used to” is possible in this case. Compare these examples with the ones above:

Every Monday I used to begin my day with a big cup of coffee.
Jim always used to begin a meeting with some small talk.

However, we never use “would” to talk about states in the past:

Jennifer would live in London when she was younger.
Jennifer used to live in London when she was younger.
