Tag questions are used to:
- check or confirm information – they serve as a way to seek agreement or confirmation from the listener, allowing the speaker to verify their understanding or ensure that the information provided is accurate
- She isn’t the keynote speaker at the conference, is she?
- You’ve reviewed the contract thoroughly, haven’t you?
- The presentation didn’t go well, did it?
- soften your opinion or advice – using question tags allows the speaker to present their opinion or advice as a suggestion and open it up for discussion rather than stating it forcefully.
- I think it would be beneficial to implement this new strategy as soon as possible, wouldn’t it?
- This proposal seems reasonable, doesn’t it?
- We shouldn’t include this feature in the software, should we?
