Course description
Target audience: speakers of English at intermediate level or above who wish to improve their business communication skills in meetings and negotiations
Workshop objectives: to improve communication skills in English in a business context.
In the series of meetings, participants will practice the use of idiomatic expressions and formal and informal business language in situations such as: preparing a meeting agenda, greeting and self-presentation, presenting the topic of a meeting, small meetings and large industry events, moderating a meeting, difficult negotiations, reaching consensus, agreement, breaking off negotiations, networking, and writing email correspondence and meeting minutes.

Course content
– Starting the meeting: greeting and self-presentation, use of idiomatic expressions and informal business language.
– Presentation of the subject of the meeting: presentation of the agenda, proposal of meeting rules using expressions for logical sequences.
– Intimate meetings and large industry events – situational scenes and panel discussion on current trends and exchange of experiences, use of idiomatic expressions and informal business language.
– Assertiveness, submissiveness or dominance – case studies and proposals for changes in behaviour or attitudes, use of idiomatic expressions and formal and informal business language.
– Moderating a formal and informal meeting – strengthening soft skills in English using idiomatic expressions and business style.
– Difficult negotiations – role plays with suggested idiomatic expressions for politely interrupting, asking not to be interrupted, firmly stating an offer and sentence.
– Consensus, agree or break off negotiations – panel discussion with case study and useful idiomatic expressions and use of relevant business language.
– Drawing conclusions and summarising findings, role plays.
– Networking – practising dialogues based on the principles of small talk to be used e.g. during a lunch break, at a conference, at professional meetings etc. – use of idiomatic expressions and appropriate business language.
– Post-meeting communication – email correspondence to thank for attending the meeting, maintain contact and confirm findings, writing meeting minutes in English.
